Music Marketing Post #1

 This quarter we are working on a project based on music marketing. Our project is to create a marketing campaign, a music video for a new band based on an already-released song, and research based on the genre that was given to us. My group and I were given the alternative/indie genre and after some deliberating, we chose the song The Man by The Killers (The song is linked). After listening to the song we thought of some ideas for the music video based on the lyrics and the overall tone of the song. We first thought of the 80s when we heard the song so we planned to incorporate that into the video. We then thought of a decades concept for the video, where throughout the song, the main character would go through the different decades while singing the song. This idea got pretty far until we realized the concept caused us to struggle to create a brand for the band. The idea didn't show a clear message. My partner Ace had the idea to base the band off of the seven deadly sins, and the song was going to be about pride. We loved the idea and even though it caused us to go a bit backward in terms of progress, we believe the end result will be better for it.

As mentioned previously, we also had to do research based on the genre we were given. We chose Domino and RCA records based on the artists that represent them. The entire group loves and actively listens to this genre so we wanted to pick bands and artists we liked so it would be more enjoyable to research. We split the work and completed the charts so we had a framework on which to base our campaign. We started our campaign and have many ideas on how to market it. The research definitely helps because it shows us what is successful and what can set our band apart from the others. Our campaign is still in the planning stage but we have a lot of ideas that we are going to incorporate. We also have done our storyboard for the music video. Our music video is going to be a promotional one about a self-centered guy with shots of the band playing behind him. The entire group contributed the ideas but Ace drew them up. The storyboard gives us a great idea of how our ideas will come to life and look in the actual video. The storyboard also shows us that we are getting our point across clearly and our video will look exactly as we want it to. 

Throughout all of this, we have been planning the little details since the project was assigned. We came up with a schedule as to when we want everything done and looking back on it, it has definitely changed but it's a good start and a good framework for the rest of the project. We also wrote down ideas we had for the music video and how they would portray the message of the song well. My partner Ale created a google doc to plan the music video based on the lyrics, along with details for the project like the band name and parts of the campaign like the target audience and why we chose the concept we did, aside from the fact that it's cool. Overall, we have been working on this project as a whole. No one has really done one individual thing, we all work together and run all of our ideas by one another. This has caused us to communicate well but has made the process of working a little bit slow and we need to keep up the pace. Our next steps are to film the music video, edit it, complete the campaign, and polish the entire thing. We still have a lot left to go but I am sure that it will all be done in time and we will all be pleased with the end result.
